Caption
The Old Wood of Drum is an ancient wood with a documented history dating back to the 13th Century. It is also one of the largest of the few remaining Aberdeenshire Oakwoods and one of only 8 woods within Grampian to show evidence of continuous forest cover throughout recorded history.

The wood lies on the well-drained morainic soils of lower Deeside and is mainly English oak (Quercus robur), with some sessile oak (Q. petraea), downy birch (Betula pubescens) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The field layer is dominated by bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and creeping soft-grass (Holcus mollis).
