Oatlands Plantation

Outlands Plantation was established in 1803 by George Carver. It was a thriving wheat plantation and the hub for numerous business enterprises until around the time of the Civil War. Oatlands began as a Federal style mansion. However, in the 1820’s Greek Revival architecture swept the nation, and George Carver gradually expanded Oatlands to reflect this style. During most of the twentieth century, Oatlands served as the country estate of Mr. and Mrs. William Corcoran Eustis, wealthy Washingtonians with strong ties to the American political arena. The week before this event I visited the Marriott Ranch in Hume, Virginia for a company picnic. I thought a large family owned estate would be ideal for this event. When I realized I was a week early, I thought of Oatlands Plantation, outside of Leesburg, Virginia. My wife and daughter and I spent the day here. It has an interesting house and the other buildings consist of an early greenhouse and a few smaller houses for employees of the plantation, as well as a “bachelor” house. The gardens are spectacular. Tours are daily except for holidays.
