The archaeological dig you see here is the result of many years of work. The "Hanleys' Village Society" was formed to investigate and document the history of the area and in 2009 was awarded £49,700 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to achieve this.

Before any trenches were started plenty of field walking, test pits and a complete geophysical survey of the area was done. The results of which led to the identification of areas of interest. These were where trenches would be places to investigate the Roman occupation of the area.

While the project was led by archaeological professionals most of the work was performed by volunteers. A call went out in the local press asking for help and this was how I found out about the project too. Across a 16 day period many trenches were dug across multiple fields by young and old alike. This resulted in a much better idea of the history of the area and its Roman occupation.

Equipment

Taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G fisheye lens. Mounted on a Nodal Ninja 5 panorama head and R-D16 rotator atop a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Shots taken at 6 positions 60° apart, tilted 15° down and another shot taken looking straight up. Raw files then processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6 before being stitched together using PTGui Pro 9.1.3 and converted using Pano2VR 3.1.4.
