Simple machines: wheels, level, inclined plane. Hydro powered wheels turn gears to run the machine. The Greeks invented the watermill and the toothed gearing. Greeks and Romans were the first to use water driven wheels.

Aldie Mill is composed of twin overshot waterwheels that were used to power a gristmill. Built around 1807, the mill's five run of French flint burrstones turned wheat into superfine flour for commercial export. The mill operated until 1971 when it closed and was restored in 2010. Today the mill is open for demonstrations
