An opening view of an enclosed exhibition section on the site of Beijing's Old Summer Palace. The site is also known as Yuanming Yuan (The Garden of Perfection and Light). Located in Haidan, a high-technology and university district in the northwestern section of Beijing. It was a Qing Dynasty imperial 'Garden of Gardens' and sometimes referred to as the 'Versailles of the East'. In 1860, during the Second Opium War, Anglo-French soldiers plundered the palace treasures and its buildings destroyed. Yuanming Yuan is east of the more popularly visited nearby present-day Summer Palace, Yihe Yuan.

Uniquely the surviving ruins are being preserved and kept mostly in place as a reminder of the destruction of the Old Summer Palace grounds by foreign invaders. Yuanming Yuan is part of China's list of key cultural sites under special protection.
