For its strategic location, human settlements in this area have occurred since the late Neolithic. Hometown Tartesso, was colonized by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians who called it Kar-Hammon. In the year 206 BC, after the defeat of Carthage it was conquered by Roman troops and became an important Roman city that was active in Hispanic politics in the year 46 BC Cesar will stand in the civil war against Pompey. At that time his name was Carmo and was passing the Via Augusta.

The Alcazar is of Muslim origin and the residence of the King of the Taifa of Karmonch. It was reconquered by Fernando III el Santo in the year 1247. Pedro I de Castilla did restore it in the 13th Century and it became one of his favorite palaces. The Catholic Kings built the artillery tower and embellished the royal apartments. The earthquake of 1504 affected it deeply, since then, the deterioration has been steady. Listed as a National Monument in 1985. Today after the restoration it is the Parador Nacional de Turismo de Carmona
