The Morgenstraich ist the beginning of the Fasnacht or carnival in Basel, which will continue for the next 72 hours. On the monday following Ash Wednesday, at 4 o'clock in the morning, all street lights in the inner city are switched off and thousands of costumed and masked drummers and piccolo-players start playing their tunes. In cliques of various size they are marching crisscross through the streets, only illuminated by small lanterns they are wearing on their heads. Pubs and restaurants are darkened but open, serving the traditional flour soup, as well as cheese and onion pies.
