There are 15 churches located in the Central Texas countryside known simply as The Painted Churches of Texas. Once taken for granted but now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, they were built by German and Czech immigrants in the latter part of 19th century. From the outside they look like many other American country churches built during that time but they are most unique on the inside. Almost every interior surface is brightly painted with murals, elaborate foliage, and abundant gold leaf. What appear to be polished stone columns and vaulted ceilings upon close examination are revealed to be masterfully faux-finished finely fitted woodwork. This example is St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Praha, Texas, which was started in 1892 and dedicated in 1895. The ceiling and walls were painted by Gottfried Flurry.
