The ruins of Restomel castle are very nicely located in the countryside in Cornwall. It is one of the chief Norman castles in the area and an example of a circular shell keep, a type of fortification built only during a short period of time in the 12th and early 13th centuries. The circular wall around the fortress measures 38 meters in diameter and is up to 2.4 meters thick. Domestic stone buildings clustered around the inside of the wall formed a defensive bailey. Although the castle was ruined by the 16th century the remains still are an impressive site. Today they are in the care of the English Heritage.
