Caption
The Alster river is a tributary of the Elbe river in Northern Germany. Its source has been covered with a decorative iron plate, which reads "Quellgrund der Alster" and symbolizes the beginning of the stream.

In Hamburg, long ago, the Alster has been dammed and forms two artificial lakes within the city. Together with the surrounding parks it serves as an important recreational area in the city.
