The re-enactment of Christ's crucifixion in Pampanga on Good Friday signified the beginning of the week-long Lenten season.

Here, Catholic faith is put into extremes by some of the locals by means of self-flagellations and actual nailings on the cross.

Some did it for penance, some seeking fulfillment of wishes, and others as gratitudes for needs granted.

The entire event has become a tourists attraction and enjoys a kind of festive atmosphere...except for the solemn moment when nails are being hammered on the volunteer.
