Theme

When I first read about the theme my thoughts immediately drifted to the Kleinmarkthalle, a market hall in my hometown, Frankfurt am Main. On workdays you can buy fresh food at about 150 market stands. You can get everything from fresh fish, meat, cheese, vegetables, fruits to exotic spices. Despite the fact that Peter Nyfeler already took a panorama of the same location in 2005 for the WWP Marketplace theme I wanted to present my own view of the market hall. The result is published here.

But after a discussion with a friend of mine I decided to interpret "food" in a broader sense. As the broader interpretation should reflect food as food for the mind (something to read) and food for the body (something to eat and/or drink) I decided to ask a huge bookstore in my hometown to shoot in its cafe in the basement of the store. After I got permission I took my second panorama for the Food event and as I really like the result, I therefore present my second panorama as my WWP entry for the actual event.

Making Of

Both shots were done with a 3.15 meter (appx. 10.33 ft) pole to reach a more elevated viewpoint above the market hall/cafe. The pole was extended to its maximum length in the market hall and to approximately 2 meter (appx. 6.56 ft) length in the cafe. The lens was attached with a custom-made bracket, which brings the pole right under the no-parallax point of the lens.

As the lens is a fisheye lens, four pictures easily cover 360°. To be sure I took three exposures at each direction. The exposures were 2 f-stops apart. The best exposed set was chosen before stitching.
