At this altitude there are no cultivated gardens that one can choose. So I looked for a natural setting for my garden. The only difficulty the wild flowers were growing in a bog and so I got my feet and tripod wet.

This meadow is alongside the road on the right going from Shaver Lake to Dinky Creek. The whole area is a remarkable area of Alpine beauty. It is all the more beautiful because it does not have the popularity of more famous areas such as Yosemite and Tahoe. The highest mountain peak in the area is Kaiser which is nearly 12,000 feet high. All the roads start in the central valley and dead-end in the high Sierras. This also makes the area less popular for the general tourist and therefore a boon for the outdoorsman. There are also many small natural lakes and many artificial lakes.

Huntington Lake (Lat: 37.253807N Lon:-119.171063W) at 7,000 feet is considered by many to be the best piece of fresh water sailing in the state or California. The lake is nearly 20 miles in length. The whole area is filled with hiking trails and tracks suitable for mountain bicycling. The most famous ride in the area takes place each June and starts in Clovis and goes to the summit of Kaiser Mountain the round trip is about 175 miles in length and entails climbing over 15,000 feet, some inclines have a 13% grade. While also being an avid cyclist, NO I haven't taken part in it and being 75 years old this year it is unlikely that I will be able to the ride in this life.

In the winter the whole area becomes a skiing paradise. Average snowfall is between 100 and 180 inches, coming mostly late December through March. There is still snow at higher levels today (28 June 2006). So come and visit the area but at the same time keep it secret. I am so keen on the area that I have a cabin at Shaver Lake where I spend most of my summers.
