Caption
Conceived in 1933, first planted in 1945, and opened to the public in 1967, the Australian National Botanic Gardens currently spread out over 40 ha of the Eastern slopes of Black Mountain. The garden maintains a collection of plants from all over Australia and cultivates some of those threatened in the wild.

This week in Canberra, night time temperatures have dropped to -4°C making the search for colourful gardens in bloom a somewhat fruitless one. Never the less, the native flora has a charm all its own and manages to add a unique brand of green to the landscape.
