This is the coke plant "Zollverein" (Kokerei Zollverein), it is part of the World Heritage Site "Zeche Zollverein" (see also here) in Essen.

For about 40 Years this was a profane working place, nowadays it is elevated to a cathedral of the industrial culture.

The picture was taken on a special night, the one from the 21. to the 22. of June. Every year at the weekend near to this date the "Extraschicht" (Extrashift) happens.

My hometown Essen is part of a region that was dominated by steel- and coalmining industries up to the 80's of the last century ("Ruhrgebiet"). The industry (such as the famous Krupp-Werke) vanished, but many of the buildings still remained. At the "Extrashift" they are illuminated and a lot of cultural events (from art exhibitions to pop concerts, from theatre to literature) take place there.
