Designed by the English architect Selden Wornum as a summer residence for the Regent Queen Maria Cristina -widow of King Alfonso XIIth and mother of Alfonso XIIIth- Donostia - S. Sebastian's Miramar Palace opened in 1893, exactly 125 years ago.

The Queen selected the location of the estate to build it and commissioned the gardens to the reputed French landscaper Pierre Ducasse, who placed a grassy meadow in front not to obstruct the splendid views of the bay.

All this made of the city the new summer Court, and contributed enormously to its reputation as an elegant holiday destination. The Queen herself was extremely faithful to it, having passed 40 summers here.
