Flora, Fauna and Humanity have been living in the rhythm of the seasons for millions of years now. Not only for his food man depends on a climate that is favourable to his agricultural activities. Even in our time draughts, storms, flooding and other phenomena of the weather can cause famines and the deaths of millions of people.

So man has tried to find means to reach at least some degree of independence of weather conditions. Within a very, very limited range he has succeeded in doing so, e.g. by building greenhouses. With the help of these one can even grow plants from different climate zones.

But where tropical trees are concerned, you really need large greenhouses, amongst which some of the most beautiful ones are Victorian Greenhouses.

The panorama was taken in the historical Main Tropical Greenhouse of the Botanical Garden in Berlin. This greenhouse is huge - with a length of 60m and a height of 23m it is one of the largest in the world. It was built in 1906/1907 in Victorian style and renovated from 2006 to 2009. Due to this renovation, the energy needs of the greenhouse could be cut by half.
