The Brig o'Balgownie is one of the oldest bridges in the UK and crosses a gorge on the River Don on the edge of Old Aberdeen.

The building of the Brig o'Balgownie that started c.1290 was completed c.1320 thanks to King Robert the Bruce, after delays caused by the war of independence.

The bridge spans approximately 20 meters, is approximately 12 meters high and is between 3 and 4 meters wide.

The bridge is maintained from a fund held by the Town Council that was setup in 1605 to pay £27 8s. 6d. annually, in perpetuity, for it's upkeep - this fund in fact payed for the building of the new Bridge of Don in 1830 (visible in the distance down river).
