Hunters Point Power Plant is located on the bank of the San Francisco Bay between Herons Head Wetland Park and the India Basin Shoreline Park in San Francisco. Operated by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the aging power plant has been under environmental scrutiny for several years and is scheduled to close by the end of 2007.

The Bayview/Hunter's Point district is a predominantly African-American community that is one of the poorest areas of the San Francisco metropolitan area. During World War II, the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard was located in the district. It was closed in 1974 and is now a federal Superfund site due to severe chemical and radioactive contamination. Bayview is also home to another power plant, a sewage treatment plant, and a hazardous materials waste disposal plant.
