Every weekend the members of the San Fernando Valley Bicycling Club ride together on various local routes ranging from 30 to 100 miles. Some riders are more intense than others, but all burn off quite a few calories as they ride.

Calories are a measure of heat energy. The 59 cyclists appearing in this panorama will burn off roughly some 150,000 calories today, assuming an average weight of 165 pounds (75 kg) and distance of 40 miles (64.4 km) over relatively flat terrain at 17 miles per hour (27.4 kph).

Of course the actual calories burned by an individual vary based on weight, age, body mass index, conditioning, terrain, speed, air temperature, etc., during the ride. The net loss for the day also depends on food and drink intake during the ride and the amount eaten at favorite rest stops along the route. :-)

Cycling's an excellent way to lose weight, get fit, and save gas when commuting to work. Riding in a club provides companionship and makes exercise much more enjoyable. Please be sure to follow road rules and wear a helmet when you ride.
