The Ottawa River was one of the first "roads" for European explorers who traveled through the wilderness in the 17th Century. In the early 19th Century a few settlements were founded on both sides of the river in this area located at the "crossroads" of three rivers—the Ottawa River, the Rideau River and the Gatineau River. Now this is the political center of Canada and a "crossroads of civilizations"—Aboriginal, English and French...
