Caption
An inside view of a beach shelter made from logs and drift wood. The location is French Beach, named after James French, a local resident and naturalist.

The beach is part of a large wilderness park along the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada and is looking southward out at the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On the horizon is Olympic National Park in Washington, USA.

The entire stretch of this island beach is covered with logs and old driftwood washed ashore by generations of coastal storms as well as an abundance of round rocks and smooth stones left behind by the movement of past continental glaciers.
