Built in the beginning of the last century to help protect the Adirondacks State Park from fire and having served it's purpose from 1920 when it was erected to 1973 when the fire surveillance turned to airplanes to do the job, the Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower stands now as one of the last firetowers in the states of New York and Vermont.

Spring to autumn, fire wardens spent the day in the tower's lookout watching the forests and lived on cabins just below, having as company, eventual hikers and bears. Some of the wardens couldn't stand more than one season of isolation.

After being deactivated by the state, most of the firetowers were demolished and the Hurricane Mountain one was on the line to have the same destiny but recently, it had it's nomination to the National Register of Historic Places approved by the State Review Board.

The Tower will now help preserve the Adirondacks history.

(No-do-ne-yo is the aboriginal name for the Hurricane Mountain, it means Hill of the Wind)
