Airports - symbols for transportation. Thousands of people and tons of goods are flown around the world each day. People traveling to and from airports, goods, machinery and persons being hauled around, shops and restaurants inside airports being supplied: All impossible without modern means of transportation.

The colorful light installations along the one kilometer long conveyors in Terminal 1 of Munich Airport (opened 1992) were designed by Keith Sonnier using neon, aluminum, glass and mirrors. It is called "Lichtweg" (Path of light). People traveling from and to their planes get immersed in a kind of light bath.

When taking the panorama I was lucky that one of the conveyor belts was out of order, making it easier to shoot the pictures without being "swept away". Travelers were curious, police did not interfer as I was expecting and only one airport staff member was asking what I was doing and if I did stop the conveyor.

Munich International Airport "Franz Josef-Strauß" lies 28 km northeast of Munich (and 10 km south-east of Freising). It is the second most important airport in Germany. It was built to handle 20 million passengers per year opening in May 1992. In 2003 it expanded opening Terminal 2 to handle another 20 - 25 million passengers.
