The spectacular Sun Valley Badland came into being hundreds of millions of years ago as a result of plate tectonic movements. The mudstone deposits deep on the seafloor were raised above the sea level. The substances of the mudstone are low in adhesiveness, and thus subject to water erosion. Moreover, the rainfall in southern Taiwan during the summer is heavy and concentrated. As a result, the surface of the mudstone slopes is scattered with gullies and ravines. The ridges all look as sharp as blades. Crystallizations on the surface of the mudstone are glimmering in the sunlight or moonlight. The lack of vegetation on such a massive landscape is quite a throwback to the surface of the moon, and so the badland is also referred to as "the Moon World."
