The city of Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium. The city is famous for its historical centre and its catholic university.
The Grote Markt – large market place – is one of the two historical market places in Leuven. It marks the very centre of the city.
There are many guildhalls located at the Grote Markt. But the two most prominent buildings are Sint Pieterskerk – St. Peter’s Church – and the Historisch Stadthuis – the Town Hall.
St. Peter’s Church was built from 1425 – 1500 in Brabantian late-Gothic style. The Town Hall was built between 1439 and 1463 – also in Brabantian late-Gothic style. The most prominent features of the Town Hall are the 236 statues on the façade. Each figure depicts a prominent local personality, either nobleman or artist or scholar.
