The plane of Pantalica is bordered by two large canyons created by two rivers. The cliff-faces overlooking the rivers are dotted with some 5000 tombs carved into the rock. Along the rivers there is thick vegetation, in particular oleander (nerium oleander), oriental plane (platanus orientalis), black and white poplar (populus nigra, populus alba), willows (salix), and a rich underbrush.
