One of the rarest trees in the world, the Monterey cypress grows only on two headlands at the south end of Monterey Bay on the central California coast. And even within this limited range it is only found in a narrow strip at the very edge of the wind-wracked cliffs. The habitat here at Point Lobos is so perpetually soaked by cool blowing fog that algae, as well as lichen, grows on the exposed limbs of the cypress trees. The dramatic shape of these trees, like natural bonsai, has been an inspiration to generations of artists and photographers, including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston.
