Over the years, the Lake has been a resort destination for Hollywood stars during Prohibition and is currently an extreme sports center with motocross, parachuting, water skiing, hang gliding, mountain biking, jet skis, and sail boarding. In the 1960's, the Lake played host to a motorcycle Grand Prix through town and included several stars like Steve McQueen, who raced under the name of Havey Mushman, and James Garner.
The Lake is not that deep, about 16-20 feet, but is the largest natural lake in Southern California. Because it is not that deep, the Lake is susceptible to algae outbreaks and fish-kills. Recently, an agency was created to fix these problems by reducing the number of bottom-feeders and aerating the water to get more oxygen into the water.
