Carrying "Valeriia", 45 meters long tarp in Riva degli Schiavoni, Venezia.
An action by JR for Ukraine.
Valeriia and the 7.5 million children of Ukraine are the future, and their images remind us what the country is fighting for. She is a five-year-old child that in early March was crossing into Poland to seek refuge.
The photograph of smiling Valeriia was sent to JR by the photographer Artem Iurchenko. The picture was printed on tarp by JR and his team, starting from the city of Lviv the artist made several performances across Europe - including Venice - to help Ukrainian children through art. During the action each person took hold of a section of the tarp, and together, unfolded the image.
The artwork JR "Valeriia" (2022) is shown at the exhibition "This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom", commissioned and promoted by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. Organized by the Pinchuk Art Centre, Kyiv, Ukraine, curated by Bjorn Geldhof.
