Caption
Not far from the spot where, according to legend, Roger Williams landed by boat in 1636 and subsequently founded Rhode Island, a defunct railroad draw bridge (a "Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge") of ca. 1913 stands as a memorial to a much denser network of railroad lines for public transportation. This line connected Providence with East Providence, Bristol and Fall River. The reason why it became superfluous around 1976 is visible in the background: the Washington Bridge for Interstate Highway 195 from Providence to Cape Cod.
