Caption
In the late summer and early autumn, the potato field across the road from our house in Victoria becomes a temporary home to hundreds of Canada geese. Some of them rest overnight before moving on, while others appear to stay for days or even weeks, eating their fill of small potatoes left over from the harvest in order to sustain themselves on their long journey south.

Each morning from around mid-August to mid-October several squadrons of the geese depart from the field and fly directly over our house, honking loudly in characteristic V-formation. They often fly so low that I can hear their feathers creaking as they pass overhead.
