Eichelgarten - "Acorn Garden"

This view allows a glimpse into the past. It shows how an area almost 100 times larger looked like about 400 to 500 years ago when it was used by local farmers for pannage.

Today this peaceful place gives shelter to several rare animals and plants, that's why a 18 ha fraction of the surrounding forest is protected by the European Union Habitats Directive. In 2009 I portrayed another similarly protected area in Munich.

The nearby track clearly visible on the map is actually part of an ancient Roman "long-distance highway" between the towns of Augsburg and Salzburg. At that time it was part of the strategic route from Paris to Istanbul.
