We are living in a culture where numbers are very important. Sometimes I think that something is only real to us if it can be properly measured and enumerated – i.e. put into numbers. But look at this panorama of a flooded trail near a lake in Ireland. I could give you some numbers: How many parts of the trail have been flooded? How long were the flooded spots? How deep was the flooding? To be honest: I did not bother to measure it, to put it into numbers. I only know that the water reached well beyond my knees when I took the panorama. The size of the photographer is 181 cm – that’s the one and only number you will get here.
What this number wont tell you: It was really great fun to sit on the mountain bike and plough through the waters on that, for once, sunny day. Obviously it had not been all that sunny the days before, hence the flooding. On this family tour we all enjoyed cycling on a flooded trail - a place where we could have a nice cup of tea, a piece of cake was within easy reach: so we did stop there.
