This chapel was built by a farmer from the Black Forest who was fighting in the First World War on the other side of the Rhine Valley, in the Vosges mountains in France. During the sunset on a clear day in January 1915 he looked across the wide valley and could even make out his family’s farm high up on the mountain. There wasn’t any fighting in the Black Forest yet, but he had witnessed death and destruction in the Vosges. The farmer made a vow on this day, that he would build a chapel if the Black Forest should be spared during the war.
