Peterhead Power Station is the only remaining fossil fuel powered electricity generating station in Scotland. Originally designed as an oil-fired power station, the station was converted to burn gas as well as oil and is now one of Scotland's biggest polluters.

As the UK has pledged to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the power station is facing an uncertain future.

The dark green buildings on the horizon to the left of the power station are part of a new 400 kV electricity substation now under construction. This new substation is required to reinforce the transmission network at Peterhead due to the significant increase in both onshore and offshore renewable energy generation within the north east of Scotland.

The location where the panorama was taken from is a public viewpoint featuring a unique stone and timber sculpture called "Sea Sign" designed by local Aberdeen artist Arthur Watson.
