Should we consider total eclipses as a kind of deception? Another kind of celestial deception if you want it. The fact is that a lot of animals are deceived when unexpectedly the day turns into night, and behave accordingly.
On August 12 a total eclipse was expected to be visible very near of Donostia - San Sebastián, where I do live. Here, being out of the totality zone, the moon would hide more than 97% of the surface of the sun, without covering it completely. I thought that just a tiny 2% of shining sun would not make a big difference, so I just stayed at home to try a panorama (I have to say that I was not mad at all with the whole Eclipse thing).
In the end I was deceived and disappointed.
This rather poor panorama was taken without any filters from a boat (that I removed manually from the pic) rocking off the coast of Donostia - San Sebastián just as the eclipse reached its peak (filters were not used). I was disappointed: it is just dark, nothing like the whole-moon-like-nightscape that I expected to see! And to top it all, the sun's face on the pic shows a complete circle, as if it was not just a rough 2%+ of it uncovered by the moon! I expected the sun surface to show the shadow of the moon on it.
Deception. Disappointment.
(At this point, a clarification is needed: "Deception" is a "false friend", one of those words that deceive you due to its similarity with certain foreign words: "decepción" in Spanish and "déception" in French, for instance, translate as "disappointment". "Engaño" and "tromperie" mean "deception" in English).
