Since exactly 20 Years we come to La Crueize, and each time we walked the beautiful path along the Ronc Rouge with the magnificent view into the valley of Rochessadoule and La Vallete. This year might have been the last time, since the gîte is needed for other purposes.
The slope below, which leads down to La Vallete, is terraced, indicating that it was once used for agricultural purposes. This stopped when underground coal mining began in the late 19th century, most likely due to water drainage. Only a few olive trees can still be found.
The mountain on the opposite side was also caved in, and a cable car led to the entrance of the mine halfway up. The hill above La Vallete is partly a spoil tip.
The few houses on the hillside are La Vielle Valette (the old Vallete), an abandoned hamlet that has been taken over by a few young people and transformed into an alternative rural commune.
Of course, I shot many more panoramas there during the past 20 years.
