Back Street in Shanghai, every day's life

Usually I’m taking panoramas of urban landscapes, seascapes, interiors of different building such as museums, churches, castles, and other sites to document the interest of these sites and widely share them on the World Wide Panorama for instance. As photographer, more than pano photographer, I’m rather involved in choosing the light that could really magnify these sceneries and interested in showing great atmospheres: one must never forget that, according to the etymology, that Photography in addition to being a magical way of making images, is an artistic medium to write with light, too.

I do take panoramas at dusk, in the heart of night or early in the morning when light begins to create different colors, making any shapes fading away, turning everything into a different world. For these purposes, I’m not shooting panoramas with people walking, running, or moving so fast that they will appear as ghosts on capture. So, when making panos, not many people still in action: they're sleeping or they’re at home watching the TV.

This is the reason why I don’t carry all my stuff, all my equipment, such as tripod, ultra-wide angle, panoramic head, etc… during the day

(Maybe you’ve noticed it, looking at all my captures on the WWP site : about fifty percent of them were taken inside or at twilight).

This panorama was taken when I was walking through Huangpu District's backstreets in the afternoon: many people were going to their daily business in this narrow lane named Jin Jia Fang. I noticed a lucky man smiling and cajoling lovingly his poodle, a little girl being combed by her mother, another girl with a Mickey Mouse backpack rushing home after a day spent in school, a woman delivering newspapers with her heavy bicycle and one worker doing his job. This very lively lane called to shoot a panorama.

But when done, I didn’t choose it for the “Best Of“ 2009 preferring the night lights and a beautiful atmosphere of the other one also taken in Shanghai, but any further away in Xin Tian Di district.

I’ve been rediscovering this panorama very recently when seeking for old panoramas to be part of the brand-new contribution “20 Years“.
