Pilot Ken Draughn soars over an old airstrip during a morning flight at Balloon Fiesta 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Draughn, of Burlington, North Carolina, is a competitive pilot who attends ballooning events from coast to coast.

Along for the ride is your humble photographer, who was in Albuquerque attending a joint meeting of two panoramic photography associations, IVRPA and IAPP.

Where was the camera? In mid-air, about 6 feet (2 meters), outside the gondola.

How is that possible? It's magic.
