The deserted mud brick village of Kharanaq lies about 70 km north of Yazd and is truly amazing to get lost in. Old town has been vacated for quite some time now as the government of Iran brought electricity and water to the houses of the new town. It was impossible to reconstruct these mud brick houses so the villagers moved to 'new town'. Old town is believed to be more than 1000 years old. Just before the mountains you see the mosque of Kharanaq, which has been restored and dates back to the Qajar era.
