Val Badia is one of only five valleys in the Dolomites where an ethnic minority of around 35,000 people speak Ladin, an ancient Rhaeto-Romance language spoken by the Ladin people in Northern Italy (South Tyrol, Trentino, Belluno). It is a linguistic relic from the Romanization of the Alps, related to Romansh and Friulian, and known for its distinct culture, traditions, and a standardized written form called Ladin Dolomitan.

The Dolomites take their name from the carbonate rock dolomite. This was named after the 18th-century French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801), who was the first to describe the mineral. The prior local vernacular name of Monti Pallidi (Pale Mountains) came from the mountains' reddish to purple hues viewed at sunset from said carbonates' reflection of the shone alpenglow.
