Our house is located at an elevation of 6500 feet midway between two mountain ranges near Santa Fe, allowing for sunRISE and sunset to often be quite spectacular viewed from the rooftop deck. Sunrise occurs over the Sangre de Cristo range (18 miles away, peaks up to 12,000 ft.) and sunset is behind the Jemez range. The areas of color generated are sometimes horizon to horizon and may last only seconds at their peak requiring pano gear to be set up and ready. Also, long shadows created by the emerging low-angled sun must be considered. On this particular day, the existing cloud cover was favorable but not at the ideal altitude to generate the stunning broad color spectrum as is often the case later in the spring and through the summer.
