The Jewish Museum of Venice, which opened soon after the Second World War, consisted at first of two rooms only. Restoration is under way to provide it with more space to exhibit its treasures.

The square where it is located constitutes a museum by itself. It is the main square of the Ghetto Nuovo. It comprises only of this square, surrounded by one row of houses which are all bordering a canal, gaps between houses were walled off. Thus, the only connection with the rest of the city were the bridges, which due to a strict curfew had to be closed during the night.
