The newly created Garden of Infinite Compassion, designed by Sensei Martin Mosko at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden near Sun Valley, Idaho, is a place of special energy. The Dalai Lama was here for a visit to Idaho's Wood River Valley for several days to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and to deliver a message of compassion for thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims. On Tuesday, September 13th, this Prayer Wheel, centerpiece of the garden, was blessed by His Holiness.
The Prayer Wheel was designed by Tenzin Dhonden , the Dalai Lama’s emissary of peace. It was crafted by Tibetan artisans in India and shipped to the Wood River Valley in anticipation of the Dalai Lama’s visit. Inside the 800 pound container are more than one-million mantras handwritten by Tibetan monks. As the energy from a flowing stream spins the Prayer Wheel around, Buddhists believe these prayers are released into the universe. In his native tongue, the Dalai Lama blessed this wheel by chanting a Tibetan mantra.
Born Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognized at the age of 2 as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the 13th Dalai Lama. His Holiness is considered an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Because of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, there are more than 120,000 Tibetan refugees in India, Nepal, Bhutan and in the West. Since 1950, His Holiness has resided in Dharmasala, India, which serves as the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. With a quiet energy and good humor the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner shared his message of compassion and hope from our small valley in Idaho.
