Henequen is closely related to Agave and is distilled in the same way. However, due to trademark restrictions, this flavor of liquor can not be called tequila because Taquila is only produced in and around the town of Tequila in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico. We unfortunately missed talking with Mr. Mario Sánchez Casales as the plant is open Monday through Friday. Plant tours are free. It is necessary to promote product sales in order to support the local economy. Yes, while eating dinner at the renowned "Kinich Resturant" we did see a tequila like product labeled simply "Izamal" for sale.
