The abbey was founded in 654 but burned down in the ninth century. It was rebuilt 1040 to 1052 and consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror. The monastery reached great fame and the church was enlarged in 1256 and again restored in 1573. The French Revolution ended the existence of the monastery and left only these impressive ruins.
