El Santuario de Chimayo is a Roman Catholic church in the small village of El Potrero, one of several settlements in the Santa Cruz valley of northern New Mexico collectively called Chimayo. Constructed in 1816, it is a National Historic Landmark and an important pilgrimage destination during Holy Week.
For Christmas, the exterior of the church is decorated with farolitos, small lanterns traditionally made of a paper bag, weighted with sand and illuminated with a small candle inside. The "modern" version of farolitos is used here. It consists of a string of electric lights and plastic bags, requiring no tending but still providing the desired glow.
