This panorama shows you a view of the Jewish Cemetery in the Josefov quarters in Prague. The cemetery was used from 1439 to 1787 and is the oldest existing Jewish cemetery in Europe.It is estimated that more than 100.000 bodies were buried here in about 12 layers of soil. There are about 12.000 tombstones in this small place.
Room was very scarce, but Jews were forbidden to bury their dead outside of the district. Therefore every time someone needed to be buried, they added soil, placed a tombstone and pulled the old tombstones up. That is why the stones seem to be placed randomly.
The cemetery survived the second world war because Hitler wanted to build a Jewish museum in Prague. He wanted the cemetery to be part of the museum.
